WhatsApp for Android now allows all users to make voice calls

05:46 Add Comment

If you’ve been wondering when, oh when, someone will ring you via WhatsApp so you’ll get its new voice calling feature, you won’t have to sit by the phone any longer.
Updating to WhatsApp version 2.12.5 via Google Play does the trick. Once you’ve got the latest version, you’ll see a revamped interface with three tabs for calls, contacts and chats.

Alternatively, you could download the APK installer from WhatsApp’s site and install it yourself. The version on the site reportedly brings voice calling too.

To place a call, tap the Calls tab and then the new call button at the top of your screen. Then, select a contact to ring them over WhatsApp.

The feature is slated to arrive on iOS in the coming weeks, said WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton at Facebook’s recent F8 conference.

Google's YouTube to launch kids' app

The NSPCC has welcomed the news of the app's launch
YouTube will launch a new app specifically for children on Monday in a bid to make using the service safer.

It is understood that YouTube Kids will have parental controls and restrictions on who can upload content.

The app will run separately to the main YouTube service and it will initially be available in the US only, but it is understood that it will be rolled-out in the UK later.

The move has been welcomed by the NSPCC child protection charity.

A spokesman for the charity said: "Keeping children safe online is the biggest child protection challenge of this generation. So it's good to hear about the launch of YouTube Kids.

"I'm sure it will be embraced by parents wanting increased reassurance that their younger children won't be exposed to inappropriate material."

The parental controls will include the ability to limit the amount of time children can spend watching videos, as well as a tool allowing the search function to be switched off, it is understood.

YouTube Kids will have channels and playlists organised into four categories: Shows, Music, Learning and Explore. Users will also be able to search for individual topics.

The app will be free, but it will be available on Google's Android devices only.

DreamWorks TV, Jim Henson TV and Mother Goose Club will be some of the content providers, the BBC understands.

YouTube Kids product manager Shimrit Ben-Yair said: "Parents were constantly asking us, can you make YouTube a better place for our kids.

"We've seen 50% growth year over year in viewing time on YouTube, but for our family entertainment channels, it's more like 200%."

Man Buys MacBook on eBay for $450, Gets Just a Picture of It

07:10 Add Comment
Everything with the prefix “e” seems old-fashioned to me these days.
E-books sound like they come from the last century. And as for eBay, it feels like a strangely ancient way to shop.

People do still flock there though, I’m told. And, just occasionally, they are less than satisfied with their bargaining.

Paul Barrington, for example, thought he’d achieved a rare deal when his bid of 300 British pounds (around $460) for a MacBook was the winner.

He wanted to start a business. No, it wasn’t an e-business. He wanted to be a wedding DJ and needed the laptop in order to download the appropriate software.

He sold his precious surfboard to pay for this venture into uncharted waters. However, as the UK’s North Devon Journal reports, 38-year-old Barrington received a package that was worth less than the paper it was packed in.

Instead of a MacBook, he merely got a picture of one. It wasn’t even in color.

He told the Journal: “I need a laptop so I checked the listing and the seller’s rating. He’d been a member for a few years, so there was nothing to be suspicious about.”

Being British, Barrington almost saw the funny side. He said: “Why bother sending a picture in a box? It doesn’t make any sense. I almost had to laugh.”

There’s an additional cruelty in not only failing to provide a MacBook, but also attempting to laugh in Barrington’s face.

An eBay spokesman told me: “We were very sorry to hear about Mr Barrington’s unusual experience. eBay’s Money Back Guarantee will ensure he gets a refund as soon as possible. With more than 150 million active global buyers having access to over 800 million listings at any given time, the overwhelming majority of listings on eBay come from honest and law-abiding sellers. Bottom line, when you shop on eBay, we have your back.”

When eBay talks about “overwhelming majority” of honest transactions, I understand that internal numbers put the proportion of disreputable transactions at less than 1 percent. I understand the seller in Barrington’s case has been suspended by eBay.

At least, some might mutter, it wasn’t an iPad made of wood, which one woman bought in South Carolina. It wasn’t even a sack of potatoes made to be as heavy as an Apple gadget, as another Brit experienced not too long ago.

The question is whether this seller will take on another e-guise and do it all again.

In e-world, trust is the one thing that can never be guaranteed.

This $1Million Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Will Blow Your Mind

I’m a big Mercedes-Benz fan but there are levels to Mercedes-Benz cars if your pocket is deep.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is one of the most powerful, rugged, and luxurious off-roaders to ever hit the market.

For the vast majority of the G-Wagon’s clients, the battle-tested Benz is way more truck than they will ever need. However, for certain customers, there’s a need for extra layers of protection. That’s where the armored-vehicle specialists at Inkas Group come into play.

For a cool million bucks, the Toronto-based firm will gladly build a customized, armored limousine that will make even the most paranoid despot feel secured.

The “standard” Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is insane. It’s a 5,600-pound, military-grade off-roader that can reach 60 mph in 5.3 seconds
Mercedes has even built a monstrous 6X6 version. But if you require a bit more heavy metal
The Inkas-modified G63 AMG limo is truly menacing. Finished in matte black, the stretch limo dares to be messed with
Inkas’ modifications extend much further than just looks. All surfaces on the SUV — including windows — have been armored to provide protection from bullets of various calibers
To keep the G63 out of trouble, the limo is equipped with a slew of perimeter security cameras

the G63 limo’s cabin is pretty much palatial. It features vast quantities of fine leather and wood veneer, as expected for a car of this price point
It is also equipped with a satellite TV system, refrigerator, a bar, and a speed-vault quick-access pistol holder

Olympics puts mobile communications technology to the test

Telecoms firms say their networks will cope with the strain of the hundreds of thousands of spectators, workers and athletes using mobile devices across London's Olympic Park in East London.

Thirty mobile phone masts have been fitted across the 500 acre (2,000 square metre) site, 14 of them for inside stadiums and other buildings.

In addition, BT says it has created the UK's largest single wi-fi installation.

Content providers have also taken steps to limit data usage.

The nine venues on site can hold more than 160,000 spectators at any one time.

Twenty thousand members of the media are expected, and the Olympic village houses about 17,500 athletes and officials. They will be joined by thousands more workers and security staff.

The chair of the the body representing UK mobile operators and content providers described providing coverage to the Olympic Games as being similar to dealing with four simultaneous FA Cup Finals over a 17-day period.

"At peak time when one set of spectators leaves and another arrives you will have between 200,000 to 300,000 people on site," Stuart Newstead told the BBC.

"It's as well prepared as it can be. The key to the planning has been co-operation between the operators to maximise the laws of physics, allowing a far denser configuration of masts and antennas than normal to ensure as much capacity as possible."

Organisers say that means that everyone should be able to make calls, send texts, browse the internet and upload material to social networks even at the busiest times.

Wi-fi vouchers
To relieve strain on 3G data services BT has installed about 1,000 wi-fi hotspots.

Subscribers to BT broadband, O2 mobile and Tesco Mobile will be offered free access.

Vodafone, Three, Everything Everywhere and other subscribers will have to buy vouchers ranging in price from £5.99 for 90 minutes to £39 for 4,000 minutes.

Overseas visitors are offered a rate of 500 minutes for £28.

BT says it expects to be able to handle peak traffic of 1.7 gigabits per second: the equivalent of 13,200 webpage downloads every minute.

"We have done a huge amount of capacity planning work, including reviewing and learning from events like the World Cup, Royal Wedding and the Super Bowl,"

Spectators are forbidden from bringing in Mifi devices or using their tablets and phones to create personal wi-fi hotspots to connect other devices.

Data management

Content providers whose material is likely to be popular with attendees have been asked to strike a balance between the kind of material they want to offer and its impact on data usage.

"The BBC's iPlayer will adjust throughput speeds [affecting video quality] depending on the capacity available because the broadcaster is working with operators to control that," said Mr Newstead.x

"We have also encouraged developers including the creators of Locog's [London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games] official app to gather as much pre-loaded information as possible before the user arrives at the site."

Mobile phone and computer users are not the only ones using the wireless spectrum.

  • Broadcasters to use wireless cameras, microphones and talkback systems
  • Olympic organisers to use wireless timing and scoring equipment
  • Olympic officials, team members, support staff and emergency services to have reliable communication systems.

To secure capacity it borrowed spectrum from the Ministry of Defence and has used frequencies freed up by the switch-off of analogue TV signals.

It says it will also have between 30 and 40 staff on site at any one time to check users do not suffer interference from either each others' equipment or deliberate jamming by malicious parties.

It also has spare frequencies that it can hand out to mitigate any problems.

Facebook reports loss after shareholder payouts

Facebook reports loss after shareholder payouts

16:45 Add Comment

Facebook has reported a $157m (£100m) loss on payments to shareholders such as chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in its first results since its eagerly anticipated stock market listing in May.
Second quarter costs and expenses nearly quadrupled, up 295% to $1.93bn from the same period last year.
Excluding staff share schemes, Facebook would have made a profit of $295m.
The figures compare with a $240m profit in the same period last year.
In its statement, Facebook said the rise was driven primarily by "share-based compensation expense".
Shares fell 11% in after-hours trade in New York to a record low of $23.94.
In May, investors had queued to snap up Facebook shares for $38 each.
Sales rose 32% to $1.18bn for the three months to the end of June.
But, according to BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones, that rise in revenue may have been due to all the hype surrounding the company's stockmarket share sale.
The number of monthly active users (MAUs) rose 29% from the same period last year to 955 million, but some analysts question the reliability of this data given the number of bogus profiles on the social network.
Going mobile
Mobile daily active users surged 67% year-on-year to 543 million.
But, Facebook has yet to resolve how it generates profits as users move from the computer desktop version to accessing the site via mobile phone.
The company is now making less money from each user as it becomes more difficult to generate advertising revenue.
Its operating profit margin fell to 43% in the period compared with 53% a year earlier.
"What's very clear is that Facebook needs to make a huge and concerted push into mobile. Mobile is the future but for the time being it's acting as a fundamental drag on the stock," said David Wain-Heapy of Best Response Social.

Technology : Automated Bed Makes Itself

12:14 Add Comment

Hate making your bed in the morning? Now you don't have to, thanks to an automated bed that does the job for you.
Spanish furniture maker OHEA says its new bed can make itself in just 50 seconds. The duvet is attached at the base of the bed, allowing robot arms to grab either side and straighten it out. Meanwhile, the pillows are stretched by internal cords and then lifted over the top of the duvet.
The bed works in both manual and automatic modes, with the latter switching on after the bed has been unoccupied for 3 seconds. There is also no need to worry about being permanently tucked in by while you sleep, as the bed is fitted with pressure sensors and will not begin to make itself if someone is on top. Sleep tight...
